WHERE THOSE WHO KNOW, GO

AFTER HOURS

Young, local, foodie; when the out of office is on, our team is out exploring the city.

‘My most loved locals are The Malt Shovel and Saracens. Totally relaxed restaurants that celebrate British produce; you can walk to The Malt Shovel across the fields and the Saracens salad is the best I’ve had.”

‘I love a selection of small plates at Pure Bar. You have to try the Colmore sourdough with beef dripping , and the scotch egg cannot be missed. And then they have burrata which makes any dish naughty. Washed down with Bunny Hop cask ale which is a really light Purity ale, so perfect for lunch.’

‘Moseley Village is Birmingham’s very own Chalk Farm, with its young, independent and slightly hippy vibe. Check out their farmer’s market on the last Saturday of every month and pop into Lewis’s for a laid back (yum) brunch. In the evening Lewis’s turns tapas, and if it’s hot they’ll open their huge window onto the street. Head over to the Lord Cliften for live music and a pint. The Dark Horse has a great dance floor upstairs, the bar staff are always friendly and they have jazz nights.’

Gilles’ is the local Italian ran by the jolly Gilles. The bar is the best seat in the house, overlooking the pizza oven. Go for the burrata or/and a huge arancini. When it comes to pizza I go for one of their specials with a carafe of one of their house wines. Ask for the dessert board and they’ll bring over a slate packed pull of traditional Italian desserts. Their must have, however, is the Tiramisu which they keep in the kitchen for customers in the know. Head across the road to the Oktogon for a gin (or three) afterwards.”

El Borracho: A traditional Spinach place which serves authentic little tapas style dishes. My husband, Raf, is Portuguese, so we love that European style of food and sociable eating. Share the squid ink paella with tapas sides and a bottle of read. Head over The Edgbaston after for cocktails.”

“Don’t miss out on the street food scene in the city centre! Digbeth Dining Club is crammed with street food traders and live music Thursday – Saturday evenings. Plan in advance as you’ll want to hit up an Independent Birmingham event if one’s on during your stay.”
